Traditional vs. Endoluminal

Outcome Comparison of Aortic Aneurysm Repair

  Traditional
AAA Approach
Endoluminal
Graft Approach
Procedure Time: 3-4 hours 1-2 hours
Anesthesia: General Local/Epidural
Blood Loss: 1200 ml. 700 ml.
Duration of ICU: 1.5 days unusual
Hospitalization: 6-10 days 1-2 days
Convalescence: 1-2 months 1 week
Complications: Major Minor

Traditional Approach:

Requires a large incision through the abdominal cavity.  The patient’s internal organs

are then moved aside to provide the surgeon access to the aorta, which lies deep within

the abdominal cavity.  The aorta is then incised, followed by the placement of a surgical

graft at the site of the aneurysm.  Patients who endure the open surgical repair typically

require at least one week in the hospital, often with two to three days in an intensive

care unit, and several months of home convalescence to fully recuperate.

Endoluminal Graft Approach:

This procedure is a minimally invasive procedure involving small incisions in two arteries in the groin.  There is a significantly shorter hospital stay, less blood loss and overall quicker recovery time using the Endoluminal Graft Approach.
