Women and Vascular Disease

Vascular disease is common among women in the United States and increases as women progress through menopause. Thanks to the American Heart Association, many people now understand that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women in the United States, but there are other vascular diseases that affect women that are still vastly under-recognized in America.  Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which is the narrowing of arteries in the legs, is an important indicator that other serious vascular health conditions may be present in other areas of the body. For this reason PAD is a significant predictor of heart attack and stroke. Statistically, women with PAD have a 2 - 4 fold increase in cardiovascular disability and/or death.
